Master Your Success

Master Your Success

I’ve watched the habits of many successful people and the one thing they had in common was the skill of mastering their calendar. They either did it themselves or with the help of assistants. But they all mastered their calendars. Not time management but calendar/planner management.

The president of the United States at the time was Barack Obama. I thought about how astounding the demands of that office must be. How did they keep he and the First Lady on tract and all together? Then I saw it. The whisper in the ear from an aide or assistant ushering them to the next meeting or event. It dawned on me then that the success of the day lay in the sticking to the schedule no matter what.

This is one principle is so vital to success that companies like Daytimer and Franklin Planner made millions helping people manage their goals and time better. If you are not already using a calendar/planning system, start today.

Here are a few tips that you can put to work right now:

  1. Use what works for you. (Paper or digital the choice is yours).
  2. Every minute of your day should be accounted for. Even if its just for fun, thinking, dreaming or recess. (See time blocking)
  3. Every task, activity or meeting needs to be assigned to your schedule.
  4. Leave a “buffer” between each appointment. (Bathroom break, stretch, etc.)
  5. Check your calendar/schedule before committing to any appointment or activity.
  6. If at all possible use only one calendar. Assign different colors for each family member or project or business.
  7. If using a digital calendar/planner, make sure it is synced across all of your devices.
  8. Be sure you have access to your calendar/planner at all times. Check it often.
  9. Take a planning training session and develop the habit of using your planner.
  10. Put “me” and family time on the calendar and honor it.
